Beijo means kiss.
My piece for Light Grey Art Lab’s 6 Degrees show.
Each artist has invited us into their homes, into the cities they live in, to their favorite hot spots around town, and to experience some of the gems that make their place and home special - the features that help define who we are as people.
There’s a place in my home town, Penafiel, Portugal. Everyone calls it something that would (kind of) be translated as Garden of Lovers - I actually only found out it has a different “official” name, but I prefer this one. It’s behind the public library, it overlooks a part of a valley and it’s one of my favourite places back home.
So I tried to capture the excitement and giddiness of a first love. We had to number all the 100 postcards, so I did that - and I doodled all over them too, like a stereotypical teen would doodle all over their notebooks (I was one of those, shhh). These are some of those doodles.
Unfortunately not all of them have a sky filled with fireworks or spaceship taking off because of course I underestimated the time a task would take (of course I did). Some are pretty simple, but hey. They’re still numbered kisses.
As for how personal exactly this image is - well, that’s going to have to remain a mystery, isn’t it?

Korean phenom illustrator, director & now Creative Producer of The Boondocks Seasons 3 and upcoming season 4, Kim Seung Eun sketch studies. STUDIES. I learned a lot from him in my early years of The Boondocks animated series as we both started out as Directors on season 1. Considered one of South Korea’s best kept secrets and now Tv animations. One of my Hyeongs who constantly remind me I need to get better everyday. Responsible for some of the most memorable sequences in TV action animation. An absolute MASTER.
